Arrivederci Sardegna, Bonjour Corsica

After 32 days on this beautiful island it is time to leave for some more adventure. Today pretty well summed up the past month. Woke late, went to the markets (which were the best so far), ate some salami and cheese, went to the beach, went for a swim, had a beer, having a siesta and will have some seafood for dinner. Sardinia has been "surprising!!", the delicious food, the dramatic volcanic scenery, the unbelievable beaches with the bluest of water, the friendliness and hospitality of the people, the ease of driving, the smells of the Mediterranean scrub and it's sparse population. It seems that every time you go to see something that you suspect may be ordinary you turn the corner and wow!! That kind of sums up the place. The most disappointing thing about the island is that it's visual history appears to have been basically destroyed. There are over 7000 historic sites (amazing for such a small place) but pretty much every one of them has in some ways been trashed. Even the numerous Roman ruins are a shadow of what you see elsewhere. I think that each of the invading population groups went out of their way to remove any reminder of their predecessors. So, although the history is fascinating, what's left to see is a little sad - don't expect to be amazed by Roman ruins or the prehistoric Nurgaghe monuments (a few are OK). But the positives of the place definitely outweigh my sentiments on its visual history. I hope to be back!! Now onto France....
