Today was my last day in the Loire Valley and I saved the biggest two things for last and happened to find another big thing by accident. On the way to Chambord Castle I came across some giant asparagus in a field, so of course had to stop and add this to the collection of big things. The Chambord castle is the largest of the chateau's in France and the most expensive at €22 including parking. It took 28 years to build, has 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces and 84 staircases, including the most famous staircase in the world, the spectacular open double-spiral staircase that is the centrepiece of the château. (one person can walk up and another can come down and they don't pass each other). It gets around 1 million visitors per year and I think most of them were there today, if not in the castle itself but having a picnic in the 6,000 Ha walled park. It was built as a hunting lodge and during WW2 was a store place for many of the Louvre paintings including the Mona Lisa. It is really hard to describe the scale of the place but I am glad I made the detour (apart from the massive crowd!). I then drove to Chartres to see the magnificent gothic cathedral. Having seen tons of churches on this trip this one is pretty impressive as you can see from some of the pics. They are in the process of cleaning the church was is creating a lot of controversy. The windows are pretty amazing and there is a labyrinth there you can follow its path, but today was covered in chairs. During my drive today came across the town of Moree and thought I must be lost!!
Huge asparagus, some other big things and Moree???
