My first day in Ireland was not what I expected!. It started at the Cork airport SIXT hire car desk where the desk jockey was so aggressive about taking the extra insurance. He said that the 2000euro deposit would be likely forfeited unless I took his extra insurance, and he could do me a deal of 1/2 price if I took it. Dodgy as!! The next problem occurred at the 4 star hotel "The Address Cork", where I asked if I could charge my dinner back to my room. I was told that I had to pay then and there. I explained that I was here for 4 nights and would settle my account on departure (as happens at every other hotel in the world) but was told that was not their policy and I must pay NOW!!. I was only hoping that my Ireland experience would improve!! Well it didn't, and woke yesterday morning to a thick fog and rain. So I decided to make my way to Mizen Head, Ireland’s most south-westerly point and to Dunlough Castle, one of Ireland's oldest castles, said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who brings ill fate to those that visit. However, you can see from the pics below, the 2 hour drive was pretty pointless as I couldn't see anything due to the thick fog. The day wasn't totally wasted as I made my way back to Cork via Kilcoe Castle, a stunning medieval castle owned and restored by the actor Jeremy Irons. The restoration project that took six years, involved over 70 tradesman and cost a million pounds. It was then onto the Stonehenge of Ireland - Drombeg stone circle. This very underwhelming rocks in a circle are mostly less than two meters high, and are oriented along the southwest axis to line up with the midwinter solstice. But the drive through a wet but beautiful Irish countryside was fantastic.
