Ireland's sunny southeast

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

My last day exploring the Southeast Corner of Ireland and the home of the oldest operating lighthouse in the world and finally some perfect weather. So I took another car ferry, ironically called the "Passage East Ferry" which provided a pretty handy shortcut to Ireland's Southeast. First stop was the 800 year old lighthouse at Hook Head, but the drive to get there from Waterford was so scenic. Then onto the port town New Ross - Ireland's only inland port. The port became famous as a departure point for thousands of Irish who left Ireland during the potato famine for destinations like Australia, USA and Canada. I had some time to kill, so I did the "Dunbrody Famine Ship" experience which (although a little tacky) was a reproduction of the famine emigrant experience to the USA. Given that my great grandmother Mary Josephine Ensko (Minnie) possibly travelled this way to Australia, it was worth a look. Some 9-10 million people born in Ireland have emigrated, which is more than the population itself. Finally made my way to Woodenbridge (and staying in a 400 year old pub), on my way to Dublin. Attached some pics from my walking tour of Waterford yesterday and a few images from todays drive.
