Hard to believe that in February 1945 this city was almost obliterated by bombing, but today attracts over 2 million tourists. I can see why. Even though the communists made an art-form of buildings manufactured from prefabricated slabs, which dominates the suburbs. Their presence in Dresden's skyline is a reminder that the damages of war cannot be erased within 70 years. In fact, they might never fully disappear. But it doesn't matter, because this city is magnificent. From the rebuilt Frauenkirche church, to the currently being rebuilt Dresden Zwinger (which has been rebuilt lots of times over the centuries) to the Opera House, to the walk along the Procession of Princes, it seems whenever you turn a corner there is something magnificent to see and it was easier to not put the I-phone in the pocket. A perfect walking day in a totally interesting city. Even the Soviet bits were worth seeing, (well only because you couldn't avoid them!). The parking was so easy (and relatively cheap!). If visiting Germany, Dresden should be on your list. Tomorrow I leave for Berlin and it's my last day with a car after nearly 10,000km. I will miss not being able to drive at 100mph + on the autobahns for miles on end. All the hire cars I've had on this trip have been total rubbish, but I suspect that is a covid issue as the companies try to recover, the demand is huge and they don't need to replace their ageing fleets. Avis is by far the worst. Have tried to limit my pics below as I took way too many.
