Left my accomodation in Corte for the drive to the coastal town of Porte and what a drive it turned out to be. It should normally take 2 hours but took me 4. The first third to Calacuccia is hair-raising, winding, narrow and rocky with some spectacular mountain views. The second stage takes you through the beautiful National Park with snowy peaks up to 2700m. The colours, waterfalls, pine and fir trees and views are magnificent. It's the third stage from the Col De Vergio mountain pass (the most famous in Corsica at 1460m) to Porto which really gets the adrenalin going. It's not just the animals on the road - pigs, goats, cattle and sheep but the avalanche drop offs, the single lane hairpin bends, the cyclists, the fact that you have to back up if you run into another car coming the opposite direction. The descent is nearly 40km long and took me nearly 2 hours. But the arrival at Porto is spectacular. The red rock mountains in the background run right into the sea. The view from my hotel room looks directly across the water in the cove to the old tower. This is a a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tomorrow I am taking a boat tour to discover the Scandola Nature Reserve.
