More Malta - Day 3 & 4

Updated: Mar 17, 2023

Day 3 - and a visit to the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. Glad I booked online as the walkup tickets are 50€. The Hypogeum is an outstanding underground burial complex that bears testimony to a civilization that has disappeared. It was in use between 4000 BC and 1500BC. Covering a remarkable 500 square metres, it was amongst the first Maltese entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Ġgantija Megalithic Site. The Hypogeum lies on the summit of a hill in Paola. It was accidentally discovered in 1902.

From there I walked to Fort St Angelo, then onto in Birgu, then back along the waterfront to Sanglea. While waiting for the bus back to Valetta I got a haircut.

Air raid shelter tunnels in Mellieha

Day 4 - Left Valletta today and made my way by bus to Mellieha (about 55 minutes on the No.41) Staying here tonight then will head over to Gozo on the ferry tomorrow morning. Walked today around Mellieha and to the beach (only 12,000 steps). Visited the Mellieha air raid shelter - well worth it for only 2€. Quite a pretty little town but very very hilly. The beach is covered in plastic, which would upset Alice... Could see the red castle built in 1647 (St Agatha's tower) on the next hill. Found a nice bar and read my book for the afternoon.
