Napoleon meets his Waterloo today

Updated: May 23, 2023

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on 18 June 1815 between Napoleon's French Army and a coalition led by the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blücher. The decisive battle of its age, it concluded a war that had raged for 23 years, ended French attempts to dominate Europe, and destroyed Napoleon's imperial power forever. I knew very little about this war so this morning caught the train to Braine-L'Alleud and walked to the battle site (about 2.5km). The site itself covers 20Ha and includes a really informative and interesting museum (with a 4D film), the gigantic Panorama, the famous Lions Mound and a visit to the Hougoumont Farm (by horse drawn wagon). I couldn't get the museum technology to work at all but luckily there was plenty of english signage. I took advantage of the seniors entry price €21 and spent the bast part of the day here. The battle was actually not fought at Waterloo but a few kms south. Waterloo was the place that the Duke of Wellington used as his headquarters. Over 50,000 soldiers were killed or wounded. So many, in fact, that dentists used the extracted teeth from the dead soldiers to make dentures for decades afterwards - They were known as Waterloo Dentures (fun fact). Another fun fact is the bodies, which were dumped in shallow graves, were later disinterred and their skeletons were ground down and taken back home to be used as fertiliser on English crops. It was a great day. I then walked to Waterloo then back to the train for my last night in Brussels. Tomorrow I leave for Germany.
