I love a good sign board, but today hit the jackpot of sign boards. I think Berliners love them too. I arrived at the Stasi Museum to be met by 25 huge sign boards - Outside!!! Inside were hundreds more. On the way to the museum there were sign boards in parks, on footpaths, on buildings and walls. They are everywhere and most in English. The museum is located in the former headquarters of the East German secret police. The exhibition includes surveillance and observation technology such as wires and hidden cameras. The heart of the exhibition is the office of minister for state security of the GDR, General Erich Mielke. It was fascinating to learn about the role of the Stasi and the informers and how they controlled the society in East Germany until booted out in 1989. One sign board was interesting where it showed the stories of Germany, Hungary, Poland & Czechoslovakia and what happens when an unpopular communist dictator tries to take unpopular control. (Putin!!) It was then onto the Brandenburg gate for a few pics then a walk to Checkpoint Charlie. From there to the Topography of Terror situated on the site of the most important institutions of Nazi terror and persecution between 1933 and 1945, including the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS. This is a free museum documenting the historical information on Nazi terror in so many formats. It runs along a segment of the Berlin Wall and was quite interesting, although I am starting to see the same images appear in the displays that I saw in Munich and elsewhere. Public transport in Berlin is fantastic and easy - although I did get on a wrong train in the wrong direction this morning. More exploring tomorrow.
