The Final Days Of Malta

Updated: Mar 17, 2023

Today I leavo Gozo and head to Mdina / Rabul. This involved a bus, a ferry and another two buses. Everything worked well, so pretty impressed by the public transport on Malta. I am using a weeklong €21 unlimited bass pass which is great value. Arrived in Mdina (which was the former capital of Malta) just after lunch and staying at a terrific hotel right next to the bus stop (called Point De Vue Guesthouse). It was the location of the British Airforce Command in WW2 as it looks over the WW2 airstrips below. Mdina is an old castled city but seems to be a ripoff as everything you would like to see is on a different ticket so will just check them out on the internet. Did buy a ticket €9 seniors discount for the St Pauls Catacombs tomorrow.

Day 12 - Spent the day walking around Rabul. Knocked out another 13,000 steps. Rabul is kind of interesting but a little touristy- A beer was 7€, which is the most expensive so for on the trip. After doing the 24 Catacombs (which I think gave me carbon dioxide poisoning) I found this weird museum called Wignacourt, which was a mix of art gallery and old St Pauls artefacts.including some old popes shoes and his vestments from 1600AD. Had a nice beer in the square outside St Pauls Cathedral.

Pope shoes from 1600AD at the Museum near St Pauls Cathedral

Catacombs in Rabul (some with bones, but I think they were put there for the tourists)

Day 13 - Bus today back to Valletta for my last night in Malta - Leave early tomorrow morning on the ferry to Sicily. Today's objective was to find the house the QE2 and Prince Phillip lived in when first married and where they conceived Princess Anne. Found the house but its a real dump. The Maltese government have purchased the building and hope to turn in into a museum by 2027. Some pics below of the house. Did another 12,500 steps today and walked all the way around the harbour to Silema, where I started touristing last week.

Princess Anne was conceived here.
