The white cliffs of Dover

Ticked off another bucket list item today by visiting Dover Castle and checking out the white cliffs of Dover. After a short drive from Canterbury I arrived at Dover Castle right on opening time of 10am. (I purchased my ticket online last night for £23- normally £26!!). The castle is more than just another pile. Built soon after 1066, this mighty fortress has been the site of royal intrigue and epic sieges, and was at the centre of the crucial effort to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Allied troops from the beach of Dunkirk. I spent most of the morning in the wartime tunnels including the underground hospital, then wandered around the WW1 Fire Command post and then onto the Castle itself with the old Roman lighthouse. The castle itself was pretty tacky with re-created medieval rooms (why do they do this!!), but it was a morning well spent. From there I made my way to the National Trust White Cliffs park and spent a few hours walking along the amazing cliffs. Perfect weather and could see France. Funny thing happened with my phone as it kept switching between French and UK service. Lucky it wasn't Telstra or I would have been charged $10 every time it switched. On the way to my AirBnb in Sandgate near Folkestone I called in to see the new Battle of Britain Memorial - Dedicated to the heroic and selfless deeds of the men who won the Battle of Britain, 10 July to 31 October, 1940. I would highly recommend this place. A replica Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane are on display as well as a sculpture of a crashing Stuka.... BTW the last picture is just out the front of my place and some idiot having a swim in the English Channel.
