Time to move on and see some more of Sardinia

No post yesterday as there was nothing to say! I spent the day walking around Cagliari after a visit to the San Benedetto Indoor Market which is supposedly the largest covered food market in Italy. It was very disappointing, maybe Monday is the worst day to visit as most of the stalls had nothing to sell. You know you have been in one town too long when you keep running into the same streets when you are trying to get lost! So it was time to leave Cagliari and move to my new digs in Villasimius.

After a spectacular (but short) drive down the coast past a string of stunning beaches and secluded bays which makes the stretch of coastline one of the most beautiful in Sardinia, I arrived at my terrific AirBnB in Villasimius. This former fishing village in the South east is one of the most famous villages in Sardinia. The weather was pretty ordinary today so will get busy exploring tomorrow.

The area is famous for the sustainable production of red coral (pictured) Known scientifically as Corallium Rebrum, this captivation gem is the Mediterranean’s equivalent of the Great Barrier Reef’s coral formations. Its unique colour and texture make it a sought-after material for jewellery and artistic creations. For centuries, people have believed that Red Coral possesses protective qualities, guarding against evil spirits and negative energies. One of the most famous pieces is the “corallina,” a necklace that signifies purity and protection. It’s customary for young girls in Sardinia to receive a corallina as a gift to ensure their well-being and protection throughout their life. Red Coral is a part of the very fabric of Sardinian life.
