Time to head back north?

Well not yet - It's taken nearly 20 hours of driving and numerous toll fees to get here. That little blue dot south of Santiago is me. In fact the time zone on my I-Phone here cannot make up its mind between Chile time or Punta Arenas (Straits of Magellan) time. But before I turn around, I am spending a few days on the island of Chiloe, about a 40 minutes ferry crossing across the Chacao strait, a tidal stretch of water with seals, albatross and some of the biggest jelly fish I have ever seen! You arrive in the tiny town of Chacao and from there it's a short drive to Puñihuil, which is the only known shared breeding site for Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. You could see the penguins on their island from the beach, (which you had to drive along to reach a boat). Unfortunately it was a very high tide and I didn't like the idea of driving my useless car through the waves and being stuck. So I headed off to Castro - along the worst concrete road I have ever seen. I'll be surprised if I don't have four flat tyres tomorrow. Some of the potholes were so deep they had plants growing in them! The country side looked a little!! like Ireland - Beautiful rolling green hills, interspersed with Valdivian temperate rainforest. Castro is famous for its iconic palafitos, colourful stilted houses lining the waterfront. Tomorrow I'll check them out and much more.
