Touring in Tours

Writer's picture: johnff750johnff750

Tours is a university town between France's Cher and Loire rivers. Once a Gallic-Roman settlement, today it's a traditional gateway for exploring the chateaux of the Loire Valley region (which I'll do tomorrow). Major landmarks include the cathedral, , whose flamboyant Gothic facade is flanked by towers with 12th-century bases and Renaissance tops. Which I am sure you will all recognise from the image below!

Found a very exciting object today of considerable interest: Fritz - the stuffed elephant...from the Barnum Circus. He was one of 18 pachyderms on display, he got angry, broke his chains and runs at the crowd, as a result he is suffocated and killed. (Supposedly someone stuck a cigarette up his trunk!). It took 8 months to stuff him and he has been on display since 1903. Just another reason why elephants should not be in circuses!!
