Čičmany and other nearby interesting Slovak sights

Today headed into the Slovak hills to discover a village of timbered houses which have been preserved in Čičmany. The village resembles a set of gingerbread houses decorated with white icing. Filled with dark brown/black timber structures, Cicmany's house painting began by women about 200 years ago to protect the damaged wood. Using white lime paint, they decorated their houses with geometrical patterns, zig-zags, hearts, crosses, stars, spirals, and pinwheels. This tradition continues to the present time. The village is one of the most unique in Slovakia. Whilst there, I had a traditional Slovak lunch of potato & sheep cheese gnocchi, spelt and sauerkraut. Interesting. On the way back to town I randomly called into a village of Rajecká Lesná where I found an amazing wooden carving which depicts the history and traditional way of the Slovak life using wooden figures. The work is 8.5 m long, 2.5 m wide and 3 m high. In total, there are about 300 characters, half of which move. On the first floor there is also a gallery containing images of farming Slovak life and some artefacts. Just nearby was the remnants of a 14th Century church which contained some interesting frescos. Sometimes random things can be the most interesting!!
